As a fun post in between blogs I thought it would be a great idea to interview both Adam and Alex to find out what makes them tick, their opinions on the industry, and what they really think about what cats think, stay tuned for Adams half later in the week! -R
✨ ALEX ✨
✨ ALEX ✨
R: What was your first tattoo and why did you get it?
Alex: *thinking intensifies* bows on my hips, I got them because I had just moved to Australia and I’m a strong independent free woman *laughs*. I wanted to remember the move and experiencing different and new things. It wasn’t the best of times… it wasn’t the worst of times but it wasn’t the best of times.
R: Which makes a bigger positive contribution to society, buzzfeed quizzes or
donald trump memes?
Alex: Ahhh heck. Buzzfeed quizzes make a contribution to you as a person… but DT memes make a bigger contribution to society as they help point out it’s terrible decision making. Society gain>person gain.
"I’m a strong independent
R: What made you want to be a tattoo artist?
Alex: Ummm I like drawing ‘haha’. Ever since I was little I loved drawing and colouring. I’d have disney colouring in books that I’d make my grandma colour with me too. Then I really only excelled in art at school and went and got tattooed by a female artist, at a time where that wasn't very common in the industry. Actually getting tattooed is what made me realise how amazing the industry is and that I could do this.
R: Have you ever had any negative experiences with your tattoos?
Alex: no…. Like apart from the odd looks every now and then. Maybe in Japan, there were a lot more looks, which totally sucks because it’s the best place on earth. It was hard for my Grandma to come around to my tattoos and me doing it as a job, but now shes one of my biggest fans!
R: Who is your favourite comic book/anime character?
Alex: Hak & Kakashi. mmm because I love them! they are my anime husbands <3
Together: mmm anime bois
R: How would you describe your tattoo style?
Alex: Anime! Kawaii! I like doing anything illustrative, fun and magical, or things with big amounts of meaning behind them because that's always a huge honor.
R: You're literally the best
R: Who would be your starter pokemon?
R: from first 3 gens only none of this talking lamp BS
Alex: Squirtle, squirtle squad for life.
R: If you could give one piece of advice to your 14 year old self what would it be?
Alex: *looks into distance* It's gonna sound cliche but...Just follow your dreams and don’t let anyone tell you you’re not good enough to do the things you want to. Practice makes perfect, there’s always a way. Never let anyone else put you down in life. Shine Bright!
R: Which rick and morty character do you feel Adam most resembles and why?
Alex: *giggle* JERRY, no no…
Alex: no... that’s too mean. um. Birdperson hahaha
R: What do you hope for the future of
shop 9 & 3/4?
Alex: I hope we can continue to do rad tattoos on rad people who are interested in the same things as us! I hope we can bring something new and exciting to the pop culture community which gives people a place to feel comfortable and hang out. I love my clients and if I can keep making them happy while bonding over all the nerdy things then I’m good. The Same nerdy goodness with more fun, laser beams and world domination I guess... you know, the usual.
R: What would you say are the positives of being a tattoo artist?
Alex: It’s awesome to be able to give someone something that lasts forever. Say two people want Pocahontas tattoos, they’re both going to be special and different in their own ways because each movie/show relates to each individual in a different way and I get to bring those feelings into reality while getting to tailor it to each individual.
R: That's really sweet, do you find there are any negatives?
Alex: It’s A LOT of hard work. It can be so draining and it gets upsetting when people don’t understand the hard work, time, and love you put into creating their tattoos. We spend all day tattooing and all night drawing, but we do it because the positives almost always outweigh the negatives.
"It’s awesome to be able to give someone something that lasts forever."
R: Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck, or 100 duck-sized horses?
Alex: One horse sized duck. Teamwork can be a killer…. unless you're a person in the team…
R: What is the last gift someone gave you, what was it for?
Alex:.... Massive rainbow horse plushy from my lovely fiancé….
(I got it) for being a sulky baby after getting my sternum tattooed the other day *laughs* and he kept trying to make me feel better about not being able to move. I was in a state. haha
R: Do you agree that Harry Potter was a huge a**hole and probably the least exciting character in the entire series? Like, he spent seven years terrorising his friends with his own problems, ya know? ...sorry sorry…. but like… (he was)
Alex: hahah, I just kinda put Harry Potter in the same category as Batman… like you’re cool and do what you’ve gotta do but get over your dead parents man..
R: I find this acceptable... who was your favourite character in the harry potter series?
Alex: hmmm hard one *Adam yells in about not picking Dobby because that’s HIS one*. uhh McGonogal because she’s firm but fair and let them do their own thing but helps them out when they need it. OH OR Hagrid, giant hairy animal lover.
R: Something you think is important for everyone getting tattooed to know?
Alex: I don’t know… I’m open to weird shit hahaha
R: HAHA that's fine we'll leave that question there.
R: On a scale from one to 10, rate me as an interviewer (obviously a 10)
Alex: 11, actually no.. 25.
Wait can we go back… to the other questions haha
*Alex elaborating on previous question so she doesn't let people think she wants to do weird shit*
I want people to know that I’m open to doing a lot of different tattoos and I’ll have fun! So for them not to feel like they have to go for something standard or even the main characters of a show/movie. Find the part that speaks to you and we can make it work.
"I'm open to weird shit"
R: When your not tattooing, how do you spend your time?
Alex: Gaming! and drawing, spending time annoying my better half Mr Brock Fidow.
R: And lastly, so obviously the most important, What do you think cats dream about?
Alex: Obvious. World domination. Yarn balls of fire falling from the sky and catnip apocalypses.
So as you can tell Alex is pretty super wonderful and she puts so much time and heart (get it) into all of her work. Leave a comment on our facebook post if you've got any other questions for Alex or Adam and I'll try do another interview soon.
